Dear Denise,

Using your website successfully and effectively to achieve your organization objectives involves several key points:

  • Your website must have a professional, credible look that is appropriate to the needs of your target audiences. The content must be updated regularly, and the website should be easy to navigate.
  • You must bring visitors to your website - and encourange them to return often. This can be with a variety of methods ranging from having your website URL on all of your printed materials, announcing the website at your events and in interviews, registering the website with search engines, and using email signatures and an email newsletter or announcements.
  • Add tracking statistics and strong "Call to Action" links on your website so that you can see what is happening on the website and evaluate if the website is helping you achieve your objectives.

Spirit of Volunteerism Awards

Volunteer Center Orange County is preparing for their 30th annual Spirit of Volunteerism Awards Luncheon. Each year, nonprofits in Orange County nominate and honor their volunteers at a spectacular luncheon. This year all nominations and luncheon registrations are being entered via the website. An administrative component authorizes the honorees which displays the information on the website. A set of administrative reports allows management to view information to prepare the program, track signups and financials.

Does your nonprofit organize fundraising events? Using the Internet as a tool for working smarter not harder makes effective use of staff, management and volunteer time. Integrated with email announcements, there are cost savings on direct mail and printing costs.

Videos for Training
Videos

Does your organization run training programs for volunteers? Consider the time and cost involved with assembling the trainers, arranging the room, scheduling the times and getting all the attendees there. If you bring in outside speakers or if people miss specific sessions think how useful it would be to have a set of training videos that you could use to supplement the in-person training sessions.

You may also want to consider developing a set of training videos as a product, or using specific sub- topics of the video on your website as an introduction to your services and to encourage more people to volunteer, donate or participate in your events.

Email Newsletter
Email

A signup form for your electronic newsletter on your website is an excellent way for people to let you know that they want to hear from you. The least amount of information you need is their email address. Additionally you may want to ask for their name and other details that will help you customize information that will be of most interest to them.

When you send your e-newsletter you must include a method for a person to unsubscribe.
